Stacey Magovern, CEO & Founder, Point Blank Safety Services, LLC, believes ambition is the number one quality that has taken her to new heights. She says an entrepreneur’s drive for ambition is the first essential ingredient that sets them off from their comfort zone into action. Facing personal and business challenges simultaneously are all part of the game. Just like players in a football game, Stacey learned to drive through pressure like the wind or the rain. She knows that facing challenges is an integral part of life and cannot be ignored. Facing challenges make entrepreneurs learn difficult and different things in their business. Stacey learned to stick to her ground and be resilient and tenacious at it. One of Stacey’s biggest and most infectious qualities is her never-give-up mentality. She also has a true talent for decision making and she never asks anyone to do anything she is not willing to do herself.
One of the best books to teach entrepreneurs on how to resolve challenges in their life is ‘Turn your passion into a Million Dollar Business, I Did’ by Stacey, who has been hailed as a successful entrepreneur, community leader, CEO, and founder of Point Blank Safety Services and Blue Family Fund. Inc. She learned how to become a successful entrepreneur by facing difficult challenges head-on and persevering through them.
Overcoming Barriers And Becoming A Mentor
The hardest part for Stacey has been raising two boys, working a full-time job, trying to start a company, and managing a family budget. “I always say I am the CEO of my family first. As a police wife, my husband’s schedule was always changing, and he worked 12-hour shifts limiting his ability to help with many responsibilities,” she explains. “I’m sure anyone married to a First Responder can relate to the difficulties of that life. I often joked that my free time was from midnight to 3am. also can say I don’t remember ever celebrating a holiday on the actual holiday. In a police family, holidays are just days. We celebrate whenever we can be together. This can be very challenging.” But that did not stop her from finding success.
Being a member of numerous female entrepreneur networking groups and social media groups, author of three books that guide entrepreneurs in achieving their dreams, and being a guest on over 50 podcasts talking about her journey and how the American dream is possible, Stacey has culminated into a true leader. “The key is to lead by example and be approachable. I support anyone on my team that decides to venture into their own business. I am always willing to provide my advice, ideas or examples of my experiences to help others,” she says. “I’ve experienced managers or bosses that weren’t supportive of team members that moved on and I never wanted to be that person. I also am a huge believer in networking and the fact that connections are one of the most important factors in life, whether that be on a personal or business basis. My story is a true testament to this. The person that awarded my company their first contract was someone I had made a small sale to years earlier. He remembered that experience with me and took a huge chance on my company and my idea.”
The True Meaning of Success
Stacey explains that failure itself is an opportunity that not many can see. “It can show us things about ourselves that we couldn’t have ever learned in some other way. For example, failures can help you define your true strengths and how tough you are. Fizzling at something can help you find your most genuine friends or guide you towards finding surprising inspiration to succeed.” To become successful at being an entrepreneur, one does not have to relive the things they have done, the failures along the line, and the odds against them. The most important thing is to keep going. “There is no guarantee of success on your first try. I failed in my first business when I was age 24. I didn’t fail because I intended to fail. Rather, I failed because I was only motivated to own a business,” she says. “I wasn’t ready to face the hard sprints and hurdles that come along with owning a business. However, I learned greatly from the past and used that as a motivation to try and try again.” The fear of failure can also be a problem do not submit to this fear or let it control your choices. In most cases, big things come up after a series of disappointing experiences. Tolerating and learning from those bits of knowledgeable experiences is vital to prevail throughout everyday life and then the ultimate success journey.
Similarly, leading the company has its highs & lows and all clients have high expectations. But, the most important thing to understand is that no one expects a company or its leader to be perfect, however they do expect the company to fix or resolve any issue promptly and professionally. This is not just a business lesson but a life lesson, elucidates Stacey. “The faster you admit a mistake or error and resolve it the more loyal relationship you will have. A strong client relationship comes from mutual trust. If you have built and earned this from your clients, they will be clients for life. However, when you have built a relationship on the lowest price or promotional offer alone you can expect your client to leave for the same reason.”
Building A Company
Stacey and her team understand the high expectations of corporate clients and can utilize law enforcement knowledge to meet those needs. “All clients have high expectations. What I have found is no one expects you or your company to be perfect, however they do expect you to fix or resolve any issue promptly and professionally,” she explains. “This is not just a business lesson but a life lesson. The steadfast leader wanted to start a management company for police and off-duty work. How great would it be if each officer could schedule their off-duty work and know exactly how much additional income they would have each month? It made perfect sense to her. Her husband had the police contacts, and with her sales experience, she could get the clients. “I spent two years working on my idea while maintaining a full-time job, raising two boys, and running a household. This meant I sacrificed every minute of my free time trying to make this happen,” elucidates Stacey. “I started by forming an LLC Point Blank Safety Services. I began reaching out to highway construction companies because I knew they use off-duty police for their projects.”
Stacey is thankful for the time she spent trying to create a business, even though there were moments when she wanted to give up. “I truly believe if I had this success in my twenties, I wouldn’t appreciate as much as I do. Life is all about timing,” she says. “It was A normal day in September of 2014. I was getting ready for work in the bathroom when the doorbell rang. It was Fed Ex at the door with a package for Point Blank Safety Services. You need to understand that at this point, my company was still just an idea and a business card. It did not get packages. I opened it to find a 300-page contract valued at 1.5M dollars to use our officers for traffic control on a three-year project in Dallas. I did it! I took an idea and turned it into a business that would not only change my life but the lives of hundreds of police officers.”
For the days to come, Stacey and her team will continue providing police officers with traffic control and onsite security all over the state of Texas. They recently added training services to their portfolio, alongside offering Active Shooter Response Training and Behavioural Based Safety Training. Personally, Stacey would love to continue inspiring other entrepreneurs through podcasts, magazine interviews and writing more books.
Giving Back to the Community
“I have always wanted to change lives and pay my success forward and now I truly get to do it every single day. My husband Michael and I have talked about starting a nonprofit in memory of his little brother Scotty Magovern, a police officer that passed away from brain cancer 2002. In 2017, we decided to make our dream a reality. This led us to found Blue Family Fund, Inc. Our 501c3 nonprofit is completely self-funded with no salaries or expenses coming from the charity itself. The Blue Family Fund provides scholarships to dependents of first responders, as well as provides financial aid to the families of fallen or injured first responders,” says Stacey.
They received their official IRS approval letter in May of 2017. Shortly after that, Hurricane Harvey took devastation over south Texas. Although not directly related to their mission, they immediately donated over 500 pieces of sheetrock to the Port Arthur Police Department to help their officer rebuild homes.
Though they are still a young charity, the Blue Family Fund has provided financial aid to 14 fallen or injured officers’ families. Most recently, they were able to donate to the family of an Everman, Texas Police Officer that contracted Covid while on duty and succumbed to the disease. Blue Family Fund was also able to donate to a Burleson Texas Police Officer that was shot in the line of duty. “We have also officially given scholarships to five dependents of first responders pursuing higher education. We even got to give out one of those big novelty checks on ESPN at the First Responders Bowl 2019.”
“I spend a lot of time doing speaking engagements and being a guest on podcasts promoting Blue Family Fund to gain exposure and recognizability. Blue Family Fund joined the Communities Foundation of Texas and North Texas Giving Day, and that has been a crucial part of gaining awareness for Blue Family Fund,” adds Stacey. “To learn more, you can go to https://bluefamilyfund.org/ or you can find us on all social media. We appreciate every donation. If you know of a family needing assistance the applications are also on our website.”
Blue Family Fund recently hosted a Spirited Tasting and Auction and raised $11,000 for families of first responders at Rebecca Creek Saloon in Arlington’s Globe Life Park. The event attracted about 150 whiskey connoisseurs and first responder supporters for an evening of liquor, spirits, appetizers, cigar rolling and a silent auction. Carrying through the Whiskey Hopscotch theme, special tasting of four expressions was hosted by Craig Vaught of Republic National Distributing Co.
