Kansas prohibits transgender athletes from participating in girls' and women's sports

April 6, 2023 : Republican lawmakers in Kansas have passed a bill banning transgender athletes from playing in girls’ and women’s sports from kindergarten through college, despite Governor Laura Kelly vetoing similar measures in the past. The law, which takes effect on 1 July, is among several hundred proposals Republicans have pursued this year to restrict LGBTQ rights, including measures that seek to end gender-affirming care for minors and restrict restroom use. Nineteen other states have already imposed restrictions on transgender athletes, most recently Wyoming. Critics argue that the law is part of a national campaign from right-wing traditionalists to erase transgender people from American society.
